01/03/2013 – Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ digest big gains, as volume cools down.

Market review – Thu, 3rd Jan’ 13: The major indexes Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ receded at the open, and posted mild losses. But, they immediately started to work on the recovery process. The trade was slow, tight and steady. The indexes slowly inched up, and recovered the losses, by noon. However, the indexes started the downwards move again in the afternoon, and surrendered the recovery by the end of the trading session. The trade was still tight and orderly, though. Dow Jones and S&P 500 limited the losses around -0.2%, but NASDAQ posted around -0.4% losses.

Volume: The trading volume receded in both NYSE and NASDAQ stock exchanges, and came in lower than yesterday’s level. The low volume trading helped the S&P 500 and NASDAQ to skip a distribution day. The volume was not a concern with Dow Jones, as it posted less than -0.2% losses.

Growth stocks: Leading growth stocks from our watch list had a slow start today. But, they ended the day in a wash, as the heavy volume gainers and decliners list ran even for the day. However, the decliners had a little upper hand in our “Top 250 – Growth Stock Daily Heat Map” that ignores the trading volume. The map is a simple up or down indicator.

Recap: Though the indexes receded, the action was nothing but a constructive one. They held on to yesterday’s explosive gains. They avoided a distribution day. The trade was tight and orderly. It would have been nice, if the leading growth stocks also kept low profile. They were active today, when compared with the indexes.

So, the rally remains strong and healthy.
