12/31/2012 – Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ add solid gains, “Market rally” back on track, now.

Market review – Mon, 31 Dec’ 12: The major indexes Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ started the day in the negative territory. Though, they quickly recovered the losses, they didn’t make much headway, until the early afternoon. However, the NASDAQ showed little firepower from the get go. The indexes started to add healthy gains in the afternoon, and the trading volume also accelerated in the exchanges. Though, the rally got stronger, it also witnessed sharp reactions along the way. Dow Jones and S&P 500 ended the day with a healthy +1.3% and +1.7% gains. The NASDAQ posted whopping +2% gains and outperformed. All three indexes also saw a bullish close, as they ended at the intraday highs.

Volume: The trading volume picked up pace in both NYSE and NASDAQ stock exchanges, and came in heavier than Fridays level. That helped the indexes to add a “Huge gains on heavier volume day” in their column.

Growth stocks: Leading growth stocks from our watch list had a slow start, today. Neither the heavy volume gainers, nor the decliners lists gained any traction for the most part. However, the gainers list gained the traction in the afternoon, and finished stronger. Our “Top 250 – Growth Stock Daily Heat Map” that ignores the trading volume also blanketed with greener shade, indicating the buying was broad-based, and not isolated to only handful of stocks.

Recap: The indexes saw a much-needed accumulation day, today. Dow Jones and NASDAQ regained the key 200 and 50 day moving average price levels. So, S&P 500 regained the 50 day moving average price level. Dow Jones closed above 13,000 and NASDAQ over 3,000.

The healthy gains on heavier volume sent the market rally back to, “Confirmed rally mode” now. We hope, this momentum will continue in the new year.
